AI search vs Google: what it means for Australian local businesses

By the SeenBy teamยท21 October 2026ยท5 min read

For years, being found online meant ranking on Google. That still matters. But there is now a second way customers choose a business: they ask an AI assistant and get a short answer that names a few options.

How they differ

A Google results page shows many links and lets the customer compare. An AI assistant writes one answer and usually mentions only a handful of businesses. Being the third result on Google still earns clicks. Not being named in an AI answer earns nothing, and you will not see it in your analytics.

Why you cannot see it in analytics

When an assistant recommends a competitor, there is no click to your site, no session and no referrer. Nothing in Google Analytics shows the lost opportunity. The only way to know is to ask the questions and record the answers.

What AI assistants appear to rely on

Assistants build answers from a mix of sources: business websites, review platforms, directories, news and other pages they can read. The businesses that get named tend to have clear, specific, consistent information that is easy to quote.

What Australian businesses can do

  • Answer real questions on your website. Create pages for the services and suburbs you actually serve, in the words customers use.
  • Keep details consistent. Name, address, phone number and hours should match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
  • Build genuine reviews. They are a trusted source for both people and AI.
  • Measure it. Track whether you are mentioned, by whom, and how you are described.

It adds to SEO, it does not replace it

Good SEO foundations such as clear pages, fast sites and accurate listings help with both. The difference is that AI visibility needs you to answer questions directly and to check what assistants actually say.
